Re: [eclipsecon-na-program-committee] Keynote ideas

One suggestion that I have is Adrian Colyer.  He is an engaging speaker with his roots in AspectJ and the SpringFramework.  Although he used to be an Eclipse committer, I think his last commit was about 10 years ago.  He'd probably talk about something on cloud architectures or developing for the cloud.  I don't have a particular favorite talk of his, but here is a recent keynote of his from Spring I/O 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axOPJbrIjkY

His talks wouldn't be fluffy and wouldn't have many laughs, and on the other hand he wouldn't be showing code.  But he is an insightful and experienced speaker, and has a good track record of anticipating future trends.

He works for SpringSource (same company I do). If we thought he would be a good candidate, I could reach out to him.

I might have a few more ideas if I think about it long enough.

regards,
Andrew

Hi everyone,

I would like to start putting together some keynote ideas for EclipseCon 2014. Here are two talks that I'm particularly fond of:

This talk is by Greg Wilson. He talks about the assumptions we make as software engineers (TDD is good, CI is good, etc..) and challenges us to 'prove' why those things are good. Instead of just following the advice of a famous software engineer (Joel, Martin, etc..), he challenges us to force the issue and make these authors back-up their claims with an evidence based approach.

This talk is by Bret Victor. He sets himself in 1973 and looks 40 years into the future. He explains the state of the art (for 1973) and imagines how much will have changed by 2013... Unfortunately, much of what we did in 1973 is still the same today. He then challenges us to rethink what we are doing, and not just follow the same-old-same-old.

Does anyone else have talks they are particularly fond of? Are there any speakers that you think we could invite to EclipseCon?

Cheers,
Ian
