APRIL 2017 EDITION

FOUNDATION UPDATES

PARTICIPATE IN THE ECLIPSE FOUNDATION SURVEY

The Eclipse Foundation is conducting a brief survey about open source foundations and the Eclipse community. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Please take the time to provide your opinion and feedback. Your input is valuable to us.

The deadline to participate is April 28, 2017. The aggregated results of the survey will be published in early May 2017. Thanks for providing your input!

ECLIPSECON FRANCE PROGRAM IS COMING SOON

EclipseCon France is off to a good start with lots of great submissions -- see the list of proposals here. Look for the program announcement by mid-April (@eclipsecon). Special content includes a Xtext Summit that starts on Tuesday, June 20 at the Unconference, and continues at the main conference (June 21 - 22).

This year's keynote is by Francesco Ferro from PAL Robotics, a company that designs, crafts, and customizes humanoid robots. How cool is that? So make your plans soon to mark the summer solstice in Toulouse!

BOARD ELECTION RESULTS ARE IN

The Eclipse Foundation announced the results of the Sustaining Member and Committer elections for representatives to the Board of Directors.

Congratulations to Tracy Miranda, Torkild Resheim, and Gunnar Wagenknecht as new Sustaining representatives. Chris Aniszczyk and Ed Merks will be returning as Committer representatives, along with the newly elected Mickael Istria. We're looking forward to working with you on the Eclipse Foundation Board of Directors, effective April 1st.

The Eclipse Foundation would also like to recognize the contributions of Chris Holmes, Mik Kirsten, Dani Megert, and Matthias Zimmerman who are leaving the Eclipse Board. The Eclipse community owes them a great deal for their many hours of effort on the Eclipse Board.

Thanks to all who participated in the process, especially those who stood for election.  Your contributions are appreciated.

COMING SOON: ECLIPSE PUBLIC LICENSE V2.0

The Eclipse Foundation is in the process of drafting a new version of the Eclipse Public License. This effort is a public one, and all committers and members of the Eclipse Foundation are invited to participate. Please subscribe to the epl-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxx list, and review the archives. The latest drafts are available on the list as well. It would also be appreciated if you can make your internal legal advisors aware of this change.

From a legal perspective, this is one of the largest and most important changes since Eclipse projects switched from the Common Public License to the EPL in 2005.

Major topic areas for the EPLv2 revisions include:

  • Files vs “module”
  • Choice of law
  • Modernization
    • Allow for use in scripting languages (source = executable)
      • Necessitates defining source and executable code
    • How and where source code is made available
    • Subclassing now explicitly excluded (community norm)
    • Notices
  • Optional GPL compatibility
    • Modeled after approach used in MPL 2.0
  • Miscellaneous cleanup

Please engage in the process of revising the EPL!
