Re: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Re: EclipseCon sitelooks like a freak show

Ed,

Thanks for the picture from the SmugMug site.  If you haven't had a look at SmugMug you should take a look.  It is by far the coolest employees page I have ever seen.

At this point, the PC voting seems to indicate that we should embrace the unique character of our keynote speakers and leave the photos as is.  In this spirit, I asked Jeff and Don if they would mind being introduced in the EclipseCon blog under a post entitled Keynote Kooks.  They thought it was a good idea.  I will try to get to the post today or this weekend (unless someone wants to volunteer to write the post, hint, hint).

I think the bigger issue is that the web site needs some work. I have talked to Bjorn and what we are going to do is run an EclipseConTest where the person that submits the best ideas for a new eCon web site will win a pass to the 2009 conference.  I will be asking for volunteers to help judge the entries sometime in the next couple of weeks.

I am working on setting up the goals for the contest and hope to have something up later today.  If you have any thoughts on specific goals for the EclipseCon web site, please let me know.  My working notes (really rough) are that the web site should:

Promote the conference
    - Keynotes (High level and InDepth)
    - Events
    - Tutorials
    - Sessions

Drive Sponsorship
    - Provide recognition
    - Recruit more sponsors

Drive Submissions
    - Introduce Categories
    - Introduce PC

Help Conference Attendees
    - Session navigation
    - Session Planning
    - Session Feedback
    - Share Recommendations
    - Setup informal meetings

But hey, that's just my opinion.  What do I know about cool?

Here's a cool snap of the SmugMug team:
I think we should respect the speaker's choice of photos.

Perhaps a "freak show" would draw unexpectedly huge crowds!

Hmm, so these pictures are what "cool" is?

-1 on changing the pictures. EclipseCon needs an influx of "cool".

Neil,

Thanks for the feedback on the quality of the speakers.

In terms of the speaker pictures: I am still waiting on Kevin's
official
publicity mugshot, once you see Kevin dressed up as a dancing bear I
think it
will all make sense.

Okay, so much for my lame sense of humor.

Don MacAskill's company smugmug had a makeup artist come in and do
photos of the
entire staff in super-hero makeup.  When seen in the context of their
web site,
it makes sense and is actually quite compelling for a photo sharing
company.
When I asked Don directly, he assured me that this is the photo that
he
would
like to use.  I don't feel comfortable going back and asking him to
re-
consider.

Imagine my surprise when Jeff Atwood sent in his picture and he was
dressed up
like a Dee Snyder wanna be.  I think this may be a result of Jeff
being
swamped
with his new web site and a baby on the way.  Of course it could be
that he just
is not into the whole publicity photo thing.

My feeling is that we should try and embrace the fact that these
keynotes are a
little different.  I am just trying to figure out how we can use the
speakers
photos as a way to highlight that.  Perhaps a hover over effect where
we swap
the images between the speakers?  I am open to ideas.

If the rest of the PC (copied) feel that it would be more appropriate
for a more
conventional photo from Jeff, I am happy to make the request.  I am
also happy
to lose the pictures completely, or make them smaller.

So a +1 if you want me to approach Jeff about changing his picture.
If
you have
a different idea

Guys,

First I should say that I think the choice of keynoters this year is
great. I just want to complain about a very minor cosmetic issue:
the
speaker photos on the main EclipseCon page are WEIRD.

Specifically Jeff Atwood is wearing a long blonde wig and women's
clothing, and Don MacAskill is wearing some kind of wrestling make-
up.

I don't mind this myself, but it's likely to make things harder for
people who need to persuade their bosses to let them attend
EclipseCon
on the basis that it is a professional technical conference. Also in
some cultures, transvestitism and aggressive facepaint may cause
offence. Please could some more conventional photographs of these
speakers be used?

(Incidentally if that's really Kevin McGuire's natural hair then he
may
wish to consider getting a Clay Shirky hairdo...)

Regards
Neil
