Hi PC,
These comments pretty much covered all of
the technical issues I had with how this year went. So perhaps we don’t
need a meeting to discuss it further. I still want to drink some beer
with you guys in person, though. J
I especially agree with
- clearer voting processes
- better EclipseZilla reporting
- forcing community comments instead of
just votes
- better short talk organization
Some things I’d like to add
- keynotes – A lot of the comments I’ve
heard reflect some ambivalence with the keynotes. Joel’s talk was
the most popular, but the others were so-so. I’m not sure what to
do here, other than to say that we might actually need to start the planning
earlier on keynotes to allow more time to pursue various avenues. We also
need to keep the audience in mind: developers. I think
controversial keynotes are also a good thing.
- long talks – I heard a request from
some folks to either have more technical content or more demos in the long
talks. I’m sure comments vary wildly here, though.
- tutorials – I think it’s a
mistake to make a 3 hour programming crash course for some of the topics. The
“exercise” portion of these tutorials should probably be bypassed
in favor of deeper technical explanations. In 3 tutorials I’ve
attended over the past two years, the programming examples have amounted
to: here’s several hundred lines of code, change 1 line to
illustrate feature X. It’s not really a learning experience to do
that if you don’t know why the other several hundred lines are there.
See you soon,
Doug G

...and thanks to you, Tim! You organized and led the Program Committee
to a major success! IMHO EclipseCon 2006 was the best ever and it's
significantly due to your contributions. Great job!

Nancy and Erin,
Thank you so much for your help in organizing the program,
especially the last minute details with the short talks. Your efforts and
organizational skills really made it possible to execute on our program, and I
personally appreciate all your support, time responses, and polite handling of
exceptional cases.
Best wishes,
Tim Wagner, on behalf of the program committee
