[eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] [eclipsecon] Agenda for Friday, September 16th telecon

  • Keynote and Plenary status update (see some notes below where I know the current status)
    • John Wiegand and Erich Gamma: waiting for response
    • Greg Stein: waiting for response
    • Gene Pope: waiting for response
    • Boz Elloy: should confirm PC is agreeable to substitution - see attached thread
  • Mike’s suggestion of Joel Spolsky as a “featured speaker” (we probably can’t call this a keynote) – see attached thread
  • Pre-keynote intros (one / day: Exec. Dir., Conference chair, PC chair)
  • Review of tutorials by track
  • Additional topics

Subject: Minutes and AIs from Friday, September 9th telecon

  • Tutorials
    • 42 slots max; most are half day
    • 6 reserved for sponsor tutorials (not under PC control)
    • One slot reserved for each of the six top-level projects shipping code
    • Will reach out to last year’s presenters (invite, not reservation)
    • Will invite all technology and tools projects (no reservations)
    • Sub-committees should be actively recruiting great content in addition to the above!
  • Keynote/Plenary Selection
    • RCP panel discussion will be changed to a technical slot
    • Ian: Topic suggestion for Amazon: Web 2.0 / turning search engine and store into application platform
    • Amazon speaker: vet that Gene is the appropriate person to invite; eBay as a fallback
    • Travel / lodging can be covered as needed; modest honorarium available if required
    • Need to avoid product pitches; guide keynote speakers into topics of interest to the attendees
    • Suggested theme for speakers to touch on: open source vs. proprietary models
  • Recording
    • Agreed to ask Bjorn to investigate feasibility of a single room recording setup (only talks in that room would be recorded).
    • Committee suggested that recording keynotes would be beneficial.
    • Agreed that if we go forward with this plan we will describe it as “experimental” for this year, to avoid creating distinction between the talks that do/not get recorded. Feedback from this year will inform next year’s approach to recording.
  • AIs
    • [Tim] Remind the six top-level projects with shipping code of the reservation system – DONE
    • [Tim] Remind technology and tools projects to submit abstracts – DONE
    • [Ian/Tim] Invite last year’s tutorial speakers to submit (updated) abstracts for consideration this year (need access to the email list)
    • [Sri] CONFIRM with Oracle on Thomas’ availability as a keynote speaker.
    • [Sri] CONFIRM Patrick Kerpan (Borland)
    • [Tim/Bjorn] CONFIRM Amazon (Gene or other)
    • [Tim] CONFIRM Greg Stein
    • [Tim/Bjorn] Pursue slot availability for Joel Spolsky (see email thread)
    • [Bjorn] Research “single room taping” logistics

Subject: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Keynote speakers -Borland and Oracle

All,

Boz Elloy, Senior VP of Software Products who leads R&D and product strategy for Borland is available.  Patrick Kerpan from Borland is not available (due to scheduling conflicts). I received a copy of the EclipseWorld keynote by Patrick. They are open to suggestion from program committee on the topic.

I am on travel tomorrow and will try to call into the meeting from airport. If I can not, please consider the offer. I personally think we should confirm and finalize abstract.

I have not yet heard from Oracle on availability of Thomas Kurien. I will follow up if I don’t hear anything by tomorrow.

-Sri

FWIW, I would love to hear him speak. I read his blog frequently and think that he would be both insightful and funny.
