[eclipse.org-committers] Summers of Code with Stephen Walli - Call for project proposals

Dear committers,

Together with Stephen Walli, the Eclipse Foundation is preparing to participate in the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) internship course for Open Source Software Engineering again. The course will be running from May 13 to July 31, 2025 (11 weeks), and we’re reaching out to invite you to contribute as a mentor and project proposer.

We’re looking for team-based projects that 4-5 students can tackle over the summer, each guided by at least two mentors. Mentors can overlap across projects if they have the bandwidth. We’ve found it helpful to have redundancy built in: last year, some mentors had job changes, vacations, and other disruptions.

Here’s what to expect:

• Mentor commitment:
• Meet with your student team once per week via video (any platform)
• Be available via email during the week for quick questions

 Student expectations:
• Dedicate 20-40 hours/week to their project
• Form teams and meet mentors in the first week
• Tackle a real-world challenge with support and guidance

The Course format is as follows:
• Fully remote
• Run simultaneously across Doha, Qatar (GMT+3) and Pittsburgh, USA (GMT-5)
• ~15–20 students per campus
• Teams may be formed across time zones to foster remote collaboration from day one
• Class sessions: 3x/week (50 mins), plus weekly coaching check-ins with instructors

Projects will be posted on day one, and students will be matched with mentors that same week. We encourage mentors to share tutorials, tools, and onboarding materials early to help teams ramp up.

Stephen has seen great success with a flexible mentoring approach, some mentors hosted joint sessions, others ran Slack or Discord channels.  We welcome your creativity in guiding the next cohort.

If you're interested in mentoring or proposing a project, or if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to EMO or directly reply to this email.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Maria Teresa Delgado
