Summary: Request a "Biography URL" slot in the Portal for
personal information
Product: Community
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P3
Component: Portal

Committers, project leads and AC members are referenced from many places on the
Eclipse Web pages. It would be helpful if each person could provide an URL to
host personal / biography information, such that it can be referenced from the
various places.
Right now, only a "Blog URL" exists in the Portal personal metadata. Having a
separate "Biography URL" would allow people to create a page with more detailed
background information.
That way, people browsing the web could get a better handle on the persons that
they are communicating with, which may improve communications. They could also
browse via the persons to different related projects, or get a hyperlink to the
company that a person is working for. Right now, clicking on a committer's
hyperlink in the "About this project" page is a bit disappointing:
http://www.eclipse.org/projects/lists.php?list=projectsforcommitter¶m=moberhuber
the "project" hyperlinks on that page should link to the projects' "about"
pages rather than committerlists only; the page should be enriched by the photo
(already in the portal), projects led, projects mentored, and biography text
fetched from the external "Biography URL". Essentially, this would become an
"About this person" page very similar to the current "about this project" page
(project descriptionurl replaced by person descriptionurl), which would even be
helpful if the "Biography URL" is not yet filled in.
I propose that people host their biography pages on the Eclipse Wiki,
referenced by "Firstname Lastname", like this one:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Martin_Oberhuber
This has the advantage that when editing Wiki text, people can be directly
referenced as [[Firstname Lastname]]. Alternatively, the very same Wiki page
may also hold a redirect to some external Biography page.
The main benefit of this effort, again, is that I think having some background
information about a person that I'm communicating with improves those
communications.
