The problem is not that the files are unavailable, it's that they
re-appear.
Yes, I agree that is problematic. I will look into solving it.
We do have an --exclude list on the server, but it's currently set to
exclude (among other things) /downloads/drops/N*. The above directory
has a version between, so it's getting through. I have tweaked our
exclude list to include these patterns, and I have asked our project
teams to follow the conventions:

currently cannot handle it well. It takes from 25min to >60min to get
the file list of the whole repository, showing clearly that the
machine lacks ram and is at the limit of disk seeks
