thank you Stephan! to me, these aren't naive thoughts at all, instead the most relevant ones in this context!

to me, both your thoughts lead to the same conclusion: maintain the status quo. if the architecture is too rigid, don't try, if AI makes IDEs irrelevant, don't try. that is a safe, stable and solid position. but it also smells a lot like a project in maintenance mode: less forward progress, less openness to new challenges, and less attrsctive to next gen contributors.

on choosing to work without AI: a completely valid personal choice and i respect it. i also think about the millions of developers in the ecosystem who may have their choices too.

and your question: "does anybody still need us?" is exactly the question a v5 process could attempt to answer formally as a community. the ecosystem will not show us a roadmap. users may or may not articulate what they are missing, and they tell their side of stories in fragments: a workaround here, an unanswered request there, a quiet migration to a competing tool.

i think the onus is on us to connect those dots and aggregate the friction, the gaps, the opportunities and sketch what eclipse could look like in five years, and why.

WDYT?

Thanks,

Gireesh Punathil

two naive thoughts:

First, if the 20 year old plugin architecture is a road block, perhaps what you
are looking for is not Eclipse v5, but an entirely new IDE. Or can you rip out
the core design from an entire ecosystem and replace it with a new design while
keeping everybody on board?

Second, at some point when AI is fully integrated, does anybody still need the
classical IDE features? Now? In 5 years? (Read: does anybody still need *us*?)

I'll stick to what we have (and happily without AI in my case).

best
Stephan
