Re: [eclipse-dev] Re: [Bug 37724] [plan item] Provide Swing interoperability

I have updated bug 37724 with a reply to comment #6.

The current state of the Swing interoperability plan item is outlined in
comment #5 of bug 37724 and I currently do not have any further updates to
relate to to you. Sorry.

Thanks, Veronika.

Looks like the bug# 37724 still has some work to do on non-windows
platforms, and a number of "dependency" bugs to fix - before it could be
closed.

Can you, please, comment on the Swing interoperability approach outlined
in
the bug 39401? It is listed as a fixed dependency bug for the bug
http://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=37724 you had commented on.

But the latest comment to 37724 [below] suggests that #39401 is an
alternative to your plans.

Could the solution in #39401 be a shortcut for Swing interoperability,
which
is still marked as a "research" item for Eclipse 3? When will the "full"
solution be available?

What shall Swing-dependent people do/expect?

Thanks,

Bob.

Subject: [eclipse-dev] Swing support in Eclipse 3.0

Hi,

The "Eclipse Project DRAFT 3.0 Plan" document says:

Proposed Items (Eclipse Platform subproject, no theme)
The following work items are being actively investigated, but we are not
yet
able to promise any solution for this release:
...
(new) Provide Swing interoperability. Eclipse plug-in developers often
have
existing Swing-based UIs that they would like to integrate with Eclipse.
Eclipse should provide a wrapper that allows Swing widgets to be embedded
within a SWT UI. [SWT] (37724
http://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=37724)
...

The date of the document is May'2003. Is the fate of Swing
interoperability
in Eclipse 3.0 still unknown?

My problem is: I am a supporter of Eclipse, and wanted to make sure the
company (a big communication testing company) I work for uses it in its
nextgen tools app. However, because of the uncertainty on that Swing
interoperability issue it probably won't happen. So, can anyone offer more
info on that?

Thanks,

Bob.

P.S. Based on what I read on the Web, it's not just us. IMHO, that
interoperability issue is really holding Eclipse proliferation back...
