Hi Dan,
If you can, I would recommend joining #eclipse-e4 on IRC (see also http://wiki.eclipse.org/IRC). That way, Remy (rcjsuen) and Paul (paulweb515) would be able to get you up to speed quickly.

Hi Dan,
Yes, if you use M3 then you need to check out the R1_0_M3 version of
the compatibility layer. If you want to work from HEAD, then you
should use I20100205-0845 [1] and also check out the e4.ui.psf (and
probably e4.ui.css.psf as well)
The modeled workbench layer is changing rapidly as we are implementing
things in the compatibility layer.
