All that aside, I gather from John that animation in the splash may not be technically possible (?).

: animating the splash is absolutely possible :)
I can try to rework my first attempt to make something closer from what's
available at pond5.
On a side note, what would be an "ideal" length for the animation?
ATM it is 3 seconds long, and looping on the last 2 secs until the app
is totally started. If our animation kicks ass, we can envision to *not*
close the splash if the workbench has finished starting up but the splash
animation is not finished yet... Something like 15 sec is probably quite
long anyway (at least I hope a vanilla e4 workbench will not take more
than 15 seconds to be launched).
