Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] JustJ JREs and download.eclipse.org Browsing
|
Hi
Up until perhaps 5 years ago there was no coherent useful EF 404
page and so a variety of ad hoc better than nothing solutions
arose.
Now the default EF 404 page is distinctly useful providing tips
and a browser, so that for most projects the correct action is to
delete their inferior vintage index.php solution and leave the EF
default to take effect. Perhaps https://archive.eclipse.org
has just such a vintage redirecting index.php that now needs
deletion.
Of the pages I regularly visit, I think the EMF Update Sites page
is the only one with genuine value. It would be good if this
didn't override the EF 404 browser, perhaps it could have a
delegate link or have a different name.
Perhaps the web managers could proactively identify all the
vintage index.php's that merit deletion.

Matthias,
It was not designed for that purpose, but with the help of a
few shell scripts, I now promote automatically-modified versions
of the same PHP pages to archive.eclipse.org as well.
So yes, the following also works now:
https://archive.eclipse.org/justj/?file=
It's a little odd that https://archive.eclipse.org
redirects to https://archive.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/
as if the platform project owns everything. :-P
It's certainly not helpful that one cannot "just see" what's on
the server, but now you can:

As an extra goody, I wanted a better browser for the
contents of https://download.eclipse.org
so I implemented a PHP script specifically for that
purpose. I did this for JustJ's content, but the
result is fully general so I generalized it to provide
the following link from which to get started at the
root:
https://download.eclipse.org/justj/?file=
Starting here, you can browse anything on the download.eclipse.org
server. It has the advantage that you can browse
folder content even if there is an index.html or
index.php in that folder.

This content browser is very useful (kudos to Ed), can
we also use it to look at archived content on
archive.eclipse.org
?
