Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] HEADS-UP: ICU4J scheduled for removal from Eclipse SDK after June 2022 release

Hi folks,

Eclipse CDT needs to keep with ICU4J for the next while at least as it has some features we need.

Is there anyone else who needs it still to share the load on keeping it maintained? My guess is if not, then CDT will continue to use current version forever and only in the places we absolutely require it.

BTW we tried to remove it from CDT but ran into problems. https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=560614 Comment 10 has an explanation.

Thanks,
Jonah

Hey everyone,
This is a heads up email that Eclipse PMC has agreed that ICU4J library will be removed after June 2022 release. The need for this library usage has reduced over time and it become a burden to keep uptodate with it and in addition it increased significantly download/installation sizes.
For most of the classes in the library there are direct replacements available in java.text or java.util packages. There are cases where it provides convenience methods but replacing them hasn't been that hard in my experience.
Every bundle referencing ICU4J is suggested to stop doing that and move to JVM classes. In cases where this is not wanted or feasible developers should be ready to provide ICU4J in their p2 sites and take over maintenance cost for keeping up ICU4J uptodate in Orbit.
Respective bug is [1].
