Hi Nick,

whether it works without optimization or not 
depends on the number of features.

Without optimization (read: generating a Digest),
most feature jar's need to be downloaded to the
client when opening the UM on a site.

Given that Europa has LOTS of feature jars, I
consider having a digest a MUST for a consumable
site.

When early Europa staging sites did not have a
digest yet, opening UM on Europa took in the 
range between 5 minutes - 1 hour - never terminate
for me, depending on network conditions and mirror
chosen.
