RE: [cross-project-issues-dev] Corona features updated for M7.

Dennis,

We did a bit of research and understand now what happened.  Basically we used to have a yellow status that meant the bundle was intended for 3.2 (at that time it was the next release) but not yet ready.  In that context green was "good to go now", yellow was "will be good by release time but not yet" and red was "danger".  Somewhere after 3.2 we lost the yellow list so the context from the web page was no longer clear.

Similarly, the Equinox zip download was originally a convenience allowing people to get everything Equinox had to offer.  There was some push back that it should represent the "real stuff" as we have a separate set of downloads for things that are in progress or incubating.  As such, the bundle was removed from the equinox zip.

Anyway, I'm sorry that this lack of clarity is causing trouble for you.  Going forward we will enhance the bundles page to better capture the state and intentions wrt to each bundle.  DJ has been working on a mechanism for doing that and it should be ready soon.

As for your immediate situation, we have no plans to do anything with any DS implementation for Europa.  The Prosyst contribution will pop out of the IP process (hopefully soon) and into the Equinox incubator.  Then it will need to be reviewed and updated by the team before it can graduate into the Bundles component and be included as part of the mainstream.  I cannot make any claims wrt timeline on that.

I happened to join the Europa call for a few minutes today and there was some suggestion of you including the current DS code directly in your bundles.  This is fine with me as long as the status of the code is clearly communicated.  I would not want to have an org.eclipse.equinox.ds bundle appearing on a Europa update site for example.  I don't know if there are any process/legal issues that would need to be addressed if you wanted to go down this path.

Jeff

Jeff,

Corona has been slowly building dependencies upon Declarative Services since Eclipse v3.3M2.  Beginning with this Europa milestone, DS has been included in the eclipse-equinox-3.3Mx.zip distribution.  Starting with 3.3M7, DS was no longer included in the equinox distribution.

The status of DS is “red”, meaning “bundle development is in progress”, we assumed it would be completed and released with 3.3.  We based this assumption upon its reference in equinox’s 3.3 plan as well as its availability in the M2-M6 distributions.  Beginning with M7, we realized that this assumption is not valid.

We are trying to take appropriate steps to resolve this issue.   Any feedback on the following would be very helpful.
1.        What are our options for using DS with Europa?
2.        Is there an estimate when will DS (Prosyst contribution) will be “green” status?

Thanks,
-Dennis

AFAIK the only limitation is on including it in a "release".  If whatever you are shipping has to go through a release review then you will not pass as the Equinox DS implementation is not ready for release.  (Bjorn may have more to add here)

I'm not sure when/where DS was included in an Equinox milestone but if it was, it was a mistake.  The bundle status page has always show it as "red" meaning "in development".  Indeed we are on a path to scrap that implementation in favor of a new one from the friendly folks at Prosyst (still in IP review I believe)

Hi Jeff,
We can remove it from distribution. As org.eclipse.equinox.ds is implementation of DS, there is not direct dependency, so Corona can be deployed into Eclipse. But, unfortunately, Corona won't work without DS at this moment. We relay on its service resolution. We didn't expect this situation, because DS was included in previous milestone. We have to figure something out quickly.

Cheers,
Marcin
