The problem; it breaks the API for CDT_1_0_1
i.e. if we put this in, cdt_1_0_1 we'll no longer be a drop in replacement
I'm all for fixes but not breaking backward compatibility in a branch.

Some of the patches were not incoporated yet in the head, because of missing pieces,
but its coming.
