Title: Message

Good day,

I installed Eclipse and the latest CDT plug-ins and documentation earlier this week. I will update to the September 12 version for another review before the Sept 17 conference call, but for now here are some comments on the CDT docs.

It's only two cents, but I thank you for taking them. Cheers,

Matthew Mahr

  • In general, the docs look good and are well written.
  • I like the basic format that every page consistently ends with Related Concepts, Related Tasks, Related Reference.
  • I like that section heading pages include an outline of the sub-sections rather than being a blank place-holder-- which I find annoying and confusing about the Eclipse Workbench User Guide.
  • My main concern is that the CDT Getting Started information could be confusing to users who install a "branded" package that includes Eclipse, the CDT plug-ins & docs, as well as vendor-specific plug-ins & docs-- I'll call these users "branded users". The CDT Getting Started section (naturally) includes only general information about CDT and it has a tutorial. However, this material is both inadequate and inaccurate for a branded user who wants to get started for a specific target platform.
    • It would be helpful to include a notice on the first page of the CDT Getting Started section (which is currently the page "CDT Overview"), something like: "The suggested usage of CDT features can vary depending on the target processor. If you are using CDT provided by a specific processor vendor, refer first to the getting started information and tutorials provided by the processor vendor to get started developing C/C++ applications."
