AFAIK CMake support is tied into use of the LaunchBar, so you need to use that build hammer. You'll need to select an appropriate Launch Target and Launch Mode before it knows how to build.

For projects created with the new CDT build support (CMake, make, etc) this icon is disabled. 

Is this on purpose, or the new builder requires more work?

I'm not using the Arduino-ish tool bar, and the only way to start the build is via the menu, or right click.
