Re: [cdt-dev] June Call

Hey gang, I thought I'd update everyone on the call. Unfortunately only Jonah and Jeff were there. I have to admit, that was very disappointing and it did lead us to have a good discussion about the state of things and where we go from here.

We realize it's hard for some of our individual committers to make these calls. It's no reflection on them since they are the life blood of this project doing what's really important: fixing bugs, adding features a bit at a time and reviewing other's work, keeping the yard sticks moving forward. As long as they have the time and interest or others who come and take their place, CDT will be in good shape.

Over the last year or so, I've been studying new directions for C/C++ IDEs and how to bring back that corporate interest where people could work on CDT as part of their day jobs. Leveraging the new IDE architecture of reusable components for debug and language services while also addressing long standing concerns of our users with the bulk and structure that is Eclipse by offering Visual Studio Code extensions as well seems to make sense.

However, it's pretty clear now after sharing that vision that not many others have the resources or desire to invest there. And, of course, I can not do it by myself or have this work be solely funded by my employer. Unless I hear interest, I will stop pushing for this new direction and focus on areas people and vendors really want to help with.

One thing I always end up coming back to, the CDT is really good. We still have the best indexer on the planet, we do support more platforms and toolchains than anyone. And we provide a pretty good experience to our users using it, at least once they finish fighting with Eclipse to get their projects set up ;). That is something we should be proud of.

As I mentioned in the invite, we only go where contributions lead us. And that will always be true. I just want to make sure the expectation is set, especially for our commercial adopters, not to expect more than our little team is providing. If you want more, come and help and bring some friends :).

Doug.

Hey gang,

It's that time and good timing as we look at wrapping up CDT 9.8.

I might also spill my guts on the future of the CDT, could be entertaining :). At the very least, we need to hear your thoughts on the direction we should take. We only go where contributions lead us.

See you then!
Doug.
