Current swt natives as shipped by releases are manually built and used by the Platform build prebuilt. There is new build system (maven+tycho) which is in development now but there are some things in swt that made us use maven-antrun-plugin to integrate with the existing native build. See .
The issue is that *.c files are in org.eclipse.swt artifact when the natives are compiled into e.g. org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86. As I don't think any maven plugin can access source files from other artifacts this was the easiest solution. We are open to suggestions though :).
