[cdt-debug-dev] Command consoles and GUI's
|
Although I prefer GUI's to cryptic command line incatiations, I thought
I'd point out a couple of areas where GUI's have never been able to
compete:
- Command consoles are contextless. I can at any time enter any command.
It is as if I had all the buttons in the GUI in a single gigantic
window. My next command can be *anything*.
- Writing down instructions on how to use a GUI is a pain. It is easier
to type in commands than to navigate menus you don't understand.
Oftentimes menus are localised, making english documentation frustrating
to use on a Norwegian :-) GUI.
Bad things about command consoles?
- There is no context suggesting what to type next
- Looking up command syntax is somewhat painful. Especially since the
documentation does not limit itself to the current context. GUI's
frequently act as "context adapting documentation". Navigating property
menus to find some option is just wading through documentation and
finally throwing an incatation.
