I don't think the first step "Add string "mips" to cpu attribute in file" is
needed any more.
We ended up making changes to Eclipse (similar to the Monta Vista changes)
to support the remote debugging so I am not sure if the other steps are
still valid.
As for your question:

Eclipse will launch the GDB server for you and shut it down when you are
done. However it is still a little buggy and does not always shut down GDB
if there is a problem.
