Re: [birt-dev] [EXTERNAL] - Re: Next BIRT Release?

Mihail,

Does OpenText have plans for the PMC? I see that Mike Fox is still on the list, but I know he is not involved.

I would be interested in meeting again, provided that OpenText wants to start running the PMC.

Hi Mike,

Yes, encouraging community contributions is a priority for us.

Hi Alex,

From the list of committers listed here: https://projects.eclipse.org/projects/birt/who the following are already active or are willing to become active again: Yulin, Virgil, ShiHeng and potentially Derek.

We have nominated new committers, including John Ward who’s been heavily involved with BIRT since the project’s inception (and has authored a BIRT book). We ran into challenges with the nominations though and Wayne Beaton is helping us overcome these.

I am very excited to have you join the project. How many committers do you plan to nomite?

Thanks,
Mihail

Hi Mike, Mihail and community,

I agree, that's great news.

One of the main problems with BIRT at this moment is, that there was no release since BIRT 4.8 and the current EPP package of BIRT contains a blocker (no report preview). As far as I can tell, BIRT urgently needs a functioning PMC and some committers that can handle the release process together (I personally got no idea how this process looks like, is it specified somewhere?). Regarding the PMC, the restructuring of BIRT into a tools subproject as triggered by Wayne Beaton (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=517760) seems to solve that part. Regarding the committers: I currently only know of Yulin Wang (OpenText), who is active on github and who seems to be the only one still accepting pull requests.

@Mihail: Are there other committers at OpenText besides Yulin Wang that are/will become active? Need new committers to be elected?

Best Regards

Alex

PS: Like Ilia (from Orienteer) I also work on a mid-sized company (https://www.tracetronic.de/) using BIRT in one of its projects.

That's great news. I do hope that "welcome community contributions" is on your list of activities that need urgent attention.

Mike,

OpenText is currently assessing the options for allocating more resources to the BIRT project and Wayne is helping us identify the project areas that need urgent attention.

Hello, Mike, Alexander and community,

Yes - we are at Orienteer pretty interested in having/making BIRT back alive.

We have Orienteer module which allows to embed BIRT reports as a widget into business applications.

Thanks,

Ilia

I'm new to BIRT development and I'm wondering if there are plans for when the next BIRT release will be published. AFAIK BIRT did not participate in the last Eclipse SimRels (2018-09 and 2018-12). Is this correct? Are there any obstacles that have to be taken until a new BIRT release can be published? I'm entirely new to the Eclipse community so maybe someone can light me up on what steps are necessary for a Release and how I can help.

A goal would be to have a BIRT release with the next Eclipse SimRel (2019-03), wouldn't it?

Alexander,

For its entire history, the Eclipse BIRT project has been mostly backed by Actuate, which was acquired by OpenText a few years back. It seems that the project is not very active at the moment, and we're very interested in seeing it rebooted by community parties like yourself. As someone who is new to the Eclipse community, we would be happy to provide you with advice and pointers on how to engage.

Is there anyone else out there besides Alexander who are interested in reinvigorating BIRT?
