[birt-dev] EclipseCon Submissions

submitted
proposed
The submission period for EclipseCon has closed.  We managed to fill all of our slots.  For tutorials we have three slots and three submissions, so there is no decision to be made.  In the short talks, 5 slots 5 submissions, we will accept all the talks.

In the Long talk section we have 5 talks for four slots.  I think we need to include the Introduction to BIRT 2.2 talk (should this be modified to be Introduction to BIRT 2.3?)

Of the remaining talks we have two from IBM, one from the OpenMRS/Google Summer of Code this summer, and one from Actuate on advanced reporting.

I would propose that take Virgil's submission on Advanced BIRT Customization (Expressions and Event Handlers) to either the Basic Report Dev (John Ward) tutorial or the Integration (me) tutorial.  It could go either way.  We can discuss at the next PMC.

If you have time to review the Long Talks, please leave a comment indicating your preferences (yes you would need to create a new login).  Links to all of the talks are provided below.

At a minimum, let me know if you agree with my plan to accept the IBM talks and move Virgil to the tutorial with John Ward.

Guys,

Talking to David Rosenbacher, he may be willing to have Pierre T and/or
Mica contribute if that helps.

Scott, I think we had originally suggested Pierre T as a presenter for
one of the 10 min talks. Maybe Pierre and/or Mica would be willing to do
one of the longer talks as well.

I'm copying David here.

Krishna,

We did a bit of moving around in the talk submissions. Jason has been
diving into the Charting APIs lately and would like to take that on for
the Charting Tutorial. Virgil has also been really diving into
Scripting and is going to do a full hour that is focused on expressions,
event handlers, and parameters, which should fill a really important
gap.

The one piece that we are still missing would be a really good long talk
(1 hour) that is focused on building charts. This would consist of:
 - discuss how data is supplied to a chart
 - going through all of the chart types discussing how they could be
used
 - highlighting some of the 'neat' features of each
 - how to create hover over text
 - hyper-linking
 - chart event handler

Is there any chance that you could put together a proposal and submit to
the EclipseCon submission site here:
https://eclipsecon.greenmeetingsystems.com/

You will have to login and set up a user profile before you submit your
talk.

Scott

ps. Still looking to see your Short Talk submission that covers Re-Use
(libraries and styles)

I discussed this with Krishna. He is willing to take these two chart
related sessions for this year's EclipseConf.
By the way, thanks for organizing the meeting.

Wenbin,

Last year at EclipseCon David Michonneau did a really nice job
presenting on
Charts. I think our community really appreciates having someone with
David's excellent communication skills and deep product knowledge
doing the
presentations. As you can see below, I have asked David to speak
again at
this years EclipseCon in March.

He has asked that I run this by you. I hope that you can find a way
to let
David present again this year.

Scott Rosenbaum

Ps: I am asking since I am on the EclipseCon program committee for the
Reporting track.

David,

I don't know if you were aware of this, but the deadline for

EclipseCon

submissions is rapidly approaching (November 19). The PMC and I were
hoping
that you would be willing to do a couple of talks on charting at this
year's
EclipseCon.

Chart API Tutorial

Basically it would be the same as last year's presentation. I think

that

things went really well last year, my only feedback would be that it

was

perhaps a little too deep, but I think that in general everyone was

very

happy with the content and presentation.

BIRT Chart Usage Long Talk

Jason Weathersby came up with this and I think it is a really good
idea. To
often our BIRT talks tend to really gloss over charts. We quickly

show

building a chart, flash all the chart types, and then do a simple bar
chart
demo. The idea here would be to go through each of the chart types
explaining how to get the most out of the chart. This includes going
over
some of the more obscure references in the designer and how to use the
scripts.

Please let me know if you will not be able to do this, or get the
submission
done in by the deadline.

The site for submissions is:

https://eclipsecon.greenmeetingsystems.com/

Thanks,

Scott Rosenbaum
