Hello Adoptium WG members,

I hereby submit the self-nomination of Canonical for the Enterprise Member Representative seat on the steering committee.

I, Samir Kamerkar, will continue to represent Canonical in that role. I am the engineering director at Canonical, responsible for Java and other runtimes and tool chains on Ubuntu Linux. I have been involved with Adoptium since its evolution from AdoptOpenJDK, in my past life role as the leader of IBM's Runtimes team. Starting with participating in the small community of Apache openCMIS back in the early days of this century, through balancing between the TLDA constrained world of IBM's runtimes for Java and the open source world of the OpenJ9 and node.js teams at IBM, I am now immersed at the deep end of open source software with Ubuntu and its  toolchains.
My motivation to bring my new organization Canonical to Adoptium, has been two fold. I wanted to utilize the great work Adoptium has done on AQA to improve the quality of the OpenJDK builds on Ubuntu. I am happy to report that we have successfully utilized Adoptium's work in setting up and completing our TCK certification. We talked about it at the Eclipse OCX conference and also recorded a webinar for the Adoptium series recently. Secondly I want to contribute to Adoptium, Canonical's skills and efforts to improve security (FIPS, SBOM),  reach (RISC-V) and cloud native usability (Chiselled Ubuntu containers for Java workloads) of the OpenJDK ecosystem. While none of this requires Canonical to be a voting member of the steering committee, I am filing the nomination as this has helped as that little bit of extra motivation for me and the organization. :o)

Regards,

Samir.

The Adoptium Working Group Charter identifies the Steering committee as a key governing body to drive various aspects of the working group for which there are elected positions to be filled.

The elected positions represent the Enterprise, Participant and Committer Members - one seat each.  A reminder that Strategic Members each have a representative appointed to this committee and thus Strategic member organisations do not participate in this election.

Through this email, we are formally announcing the Eclipse Foundation will hold these elections on behalf of the working group using the proposed timetable listed below:

Nomination Eligibility:

Enterprise Members are:  Bloomberg L.P. , Canonical Group Limited, Fujitsu Limited, IBM Participant Members are: iJUG Interessenverbund der Java-User Groups e V, Open Elements GmbH

Committer Members are those who are engaged in projects under the purview of the working group.  Committers may be considered members by virtue of either a) being employed by a working group corporate member, or b) an individual committer who has executed the Eclipse Foundation Membership Agreement in order to attain the rights, privileges and obligations of a Committer Member.  If you are interested but unsure if you are a committer member, please reach out to us and/or learn more here.

Time Commitment In terms of time requirements, most committees meet on a bi-weekly basis for a one-hour conference call.

Elections Schedule:

March 3 -14: Call for Nominations

March 19:  Announce Candidates Standing

March 20 - 28:  Ballots Distributed (Voting Period)

April 1:  Announce Election Results

Nominations must be sent to this mailing list indicating the related seat.  When the nomination period is closed, we will inform the working group of the confirmed candidates providing a short bio for each along with their position statement.  At that point, we will distribute ballots via email to those eligible to vote.  The election process will follow the Eclipse “Single Transferable Vote” method, as defined in the Eclipse Bylaws.  The winning candidates will be announced on this mailing list following the close of the election.  Self nominations are more than welcome!

Please let us know if you have any questions.  Nominations are now open! Best Regards,

Zahra
