I am wondering if there is possible to modify the children of a certain item
presented in a view like Package Explorer or Resource Navigator.

A concrete example - imagine there is a file archive.zip in the Package
Explorer / Navigator. I would like to add an action to open the file, and as
a result, to add the contents of the archive as children of the archive.zip
file in the view.
