Thinks like using a poor version of the JVM tends to cause problems. I
think it's gcj in particular that generally won't work...
Try running with the flags -clean -debug and keep close track of whats
in the <workspace>/.metadata/.log (if one is produced at all).

Best thing you can do is not use the version of eclipse that is in the
SUSE repository, but get it and install it from the Eclipse website.
It'll be more current as well.
You also should not run your eclipse installation with gcj, as it's an
unsupported Java runtime. You are better off using ICETea, Sun, BEA, or
IBM's java jres.
