Things I'd like to see ... [message #2007] Thu, 28 April 2005 10:40 Go to next message

Since there's a wish to find out what people are missing:

Being someone who likes to follow development, I'm missing an overview of
what has happened recently, so I'd like to see yet another redesign of the
download page :-)

I'd like to have three downloads pages, all referencing SDK downloads (and
with links to the project's download pages):

* One for releases. At the moment this would contain Eclipse SDK 3.0.2,
CDT 2.1.1, EMF(all three parts) 2.0.2, GEF 3.0.1, ... The links should
mention version number and release date.

* One for Milestones: SDK 3.1M6, CDT 3.0M6, no EMF, GEF 3.1M6, ... I'm not
sure how to handle non-milestone prerequisites here. If there is a newer
(closer to HEAD) release than a milestone, this should be here instead of
the last milestone.

* One for the development stream. This should mention, but does IMO not
need to link, the date of the last integration and nightly build. I'd
appreciate a date of the last CVS commit, too, especially for the
Technology subprojects.

A set of update sites - release, milstone, integration, (and maybe
nightly) containing the releases of all projects from eclipse.org, would
be a welcome addition.

Looking back at my wishes, maybe I should have crossposted to the TPI tech
project, but that is hard to do with the web interface :-)

Probably off topic but an important issue is version numbering for Eclipse
and its subprojects: Currently, there is no guarantee that they are in
sync, e.g. Eclipse 3.0 is working with myTopLevelProject 1.2 etc. This is
rather difficult for users because it means they have to read the download
pages very carefully to determine which version to use.

Is it possible to ask everyone to synchronize the release version with the
eclipse version of interest? Subprojects can have a different internal
versioning system, e.g. MyTLP.2.0.0.

Many thanks,
Sinlee

This is definitely not within the scope of this project.

In general, version numbers are only a medium-successful way to imply
compatibility. There is also a maturity aspect to version numbers that has
to be respected. If a project really is a "1.0" release, calling it "3.1" to
line it up with the platform is just misleading in a different way.

So I don't know what the perfect answer is. I just know that it is not part
of Phoenix to solve it ;-)
