Feature Idea: XP/Pair Programming Plugin [message #213550] Fri, 19 March 2004 10:46 Go to next message

I was contemplating an Eclipse Feature last night and wanted to get
some feedback.

What I have been contemplating is a way to do pair programming with
people who are remote and possibly take advantage of resources
(people) you don't know but who have expertise in areas where you want
to work. For example, I want to write a plugin extention to the
debugger to save the variable state for a run of code and then do a
diff between runs. The problem is I don't know anything about
programming in the PDE or where I need to start in the debugger to get
this info.

Now, I can go and do the traditional hours of research, reading, etc
to learn all this stuff on my own or look for an expert to teach me.
A way of contacting willing people in the Eclipse community and have
them "look over my shoulder" while I'm writing code could be a big
benefit.

Yeah, I know there are desktop sharing applications, IM systems, etc.
But I was thinking about something built into Eclipse. A way to share
out the current editor (low bandwidth), IM features, broadcast a help
request to a group of people, etc.

Thoughts?

Hi,

did you do a search for related plugins and features? I suggest having a
look at
http://sobalipse.sourceforge.net/
http://composent.com/code/eclipsesite/
and other team related plugins to not invent the wheel twice. :)

Ciao, Michael.

I did not do a search (that should teach me to open my mouth before I
think), thanks. Maybe there's some truth to "There are no original
ideas..just original people."

There's also sangam, http://sangam.sourceforge.net and a new project
funded by an IBM innovation grant at NCSU (I haven't been able to find a
project page for it yet, but it's mentioned at
http://www-306.ibm.com/software/info/university/products/ecl ipse/eig-2004.html).

Maybe it's just me, I dunno, but I would guess that it would be *much* more
difficult to find an expert to 'look over your shoulder' and teach you the
finer points of writing plugins while you code than it would be to find or
build a tool that would enable such a thing.
Do you already have someone to pair program with? If not then I would find
such a person first and then think of ways to collaorate with them.
(Actually, no I wouldn't. I would start reading the Eclipse Platform
Plugin-in Developer Guide and then I would try to write some proof of
concept programs. But again, that's just me, I'm an old fart).

Quote from the page:
"(...) Examples of the sort of collaborative features that should be
possible within the eclipse platform range from the relatively simple
such as event notification (check-in, check-out, conflicting changes,
etc.) to something as complex a supporting remote pair programming. The
goal of the Koi project is to develop a set of eclipse infrastructure
components that support the development of such collaborative features."
