Hey All,
Just used the Eclipse update manager and got updates for SDK, WTP and BIRT
and seemed to have lost BIRT altogether. Everything in the Report Design
perspective shows errors such as:
- Unable to create this part due to an internal error. Reason for the
failure: The editor class could not be instantiated. This usually indicates
that the editor's class name was mistyped in plugin.xml.
or
- Unable to create view: Plug-in org.eclipse.birt.report.designer.ui was
unable to load class
org.eclipse.birt.report.designer.ui.views.attributes.Attribu teView.
Stack trace shows ClassNotFoundExceptions for BIRT stuff (ReportEditorProxy,
AttributeView,etc.)
Any clues on why this happened and how to fix it. Deadlines are looming and
BIRT may get tossed if I can't keep the IDE going....

I wanted to try BIRT out and had the same problem. First, I installed it
into my current eclipse directory and it didn't work. So, I downloaded
the latest 3.2.1 SDK and did a clean install. I then used update manager,
which added three patches. Did a -clean start. Then:
1. Added BIRT with the update manager, as described in the link in the
previous message.
2. Did a -clean start and BIRT worked fine.
3. Used update manager, which found four items: Eclipse Project SDK
3.2.1.r321.v20060801_..., w3c sac 1.3.0.v20060811, apache commons codec
1.3.0,
and mozilla rhino 1.6.0.v20061108.
4. After installing the update, did a -clean start.
5. BIRT no longer works, similar to the descriptions in previous messages.
I deleted eclipse sdk and reverted to my pre-BIRT-update version (which I
had saved, since I went through this failure scenario twice). Spent most
of the day fiddling with this, so hope someone can offer a solution.

Michael,
I've always had issues with the update manager in Eclipse, regardless of
package. I usually recommend to people to get the All-in-One download
from the BIRT website if they want to try BIRT out.

I tried the below and it still doesn't work.. are there any other
suggestions? This is a very serious problem for new systems running
eclipse and birt. Right out of the box it's broken.
