I have looked far and wide on www.eclipse.org for an article that details
how to obtain and build the Eclipse SDK source code. I wish to investigate
the possibility of making a change to Eclipse itself so that it can
compile multiple Java source code files in parallel. But I cannot even
work out what source code I need to download, how to build it and then how
to test it. Surely there must be a starter's guide somewhere.

I think you could start from downloading eclipse sources from CVS:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/CVS_Howto
