Hi there,

I am pretty new to BPMN and the BPMN Modeler. So I hope this is the right
place to post these questions. If not, I would appreciate some sources
where I can find more information on theses aspects.

1. BMPN is focusing on a standardized notation. So how interchangable are
the tools that I can use for it ? Can I just go ahead and export the files
from eclips and reimport those to Aris or the IBM Business Modeler? Is it
possible to create an HMTL export? Are there any documents available that
share that experience or focus on that matter?

2. Lets say I am using the BPMN Modeler with a team to design
processes/workflows. Is it possible to have a central repository/database
to store organizations, systems, actors & roles that should only be used
my the team designing the processes ? How would I do it ?

3. Is there a good way to create some drill down? I am thinking of having
a high level view of processes and I can click on it to drill down to the
operational level? Are subprocesses the only way of doing it?

4. How can I use eclipse and the BMPN Modeler to translate the processes
into BPEL? Are there any plugins or workarounds available? Is the BPMN
Modeler creating any code at all and how would I see it?

5. Is it possible to tag processes and properly search for them in order
to have a good chance that parts are going to be reused in the future?

Apreciate your thoughts and experience.

Cheers!

No, there is no interchange yet. BPMN 2.0 is supposed to sort that out.

I suppose you would be using a code repository ; in BPMN, you don't
separate systems, actors and roles like this btw. Vendors like Aris
offer this kind of repository, but it's more of a suite for modelling.

Drilling down like this is typically a workflow view.

A BPMN process is composed of several pools. You need to have a view of
all of them at all times. You can decompose your processes using several
pools to decompose the process in reusable, smaller parts.
It scales better than using subprocesses everywhere.

The BPMN modeler models BPMN, and that's it. There are several options
to generate BPEL from it. Intalio, my company, offers for free a product
based on the BPMN modeler that generates BPEL from BPMN diagrams.

You don't reuse parts, however you can reuse processes using templates
with Intalio. There's no system like this one for the BPMN modeler in
general.

Thanks,

Antoine

Dear Antoine,

thanks for answering my questions!

So why would I be using the BPMN Modeler instead of tools from IDS Scheer,
IBM, Oracle and so on, if necessary features (drill down, simulation,
organization/actors/roles etc.) for BP modeling are left aside that bring
me the real advantages of BP modeling?
My understanding so far is that all I can do with it would be to model a
process and thus maybe replace my workplace guidelines with it...any other
(major) benfits?

Is the BMPM Modeler just kind of a proof of concept to show what has been
decided in the and specified in the BMPN specification? Or what is the aim
of that software?

Maybe others can comment on that as well...

Cheers,

Udo

Udo, the BPMN modeler is a modeler to model BPMN. What did you expect
exactly ?

The product suites those companies offer embed a BPMN modeler, it's
just one component.

If you'd like to see STP embed more components to rivalize with those
suites, I think you should start looking at the code and contribute.
Your patches will be very welcome.

No, the BPMN modeler is an Eclipse project to help people model BPMN
diagrams.
Or what is

To design BPMN models.

By the way, the BPMN modeler is embeddable. So products like
Intalio|Designer embed it.

Comments are welcome.

Thanks,
