What is difference between Eclipse and Eclipse platform? [message #940034]

I installed Eclipse IDE from Ubuntu software center. Now I open it from the Ubuntu (12.04) sidebar and click help, about and I see below description-

Eclipse Platform

Version: 3.7.2
Build id: I20110613-1736

But when Eclipse starts, the flash screen shows 'Eclipse Indigo'.

What is Eclipse platform? I need to use Eclipse for C/C++ development.

"Platform" is the base for tooling like JDT, CDT (C/C++ dev) etc. You
could install CDT via Help > Install New Software... but since Indigo is
already more than a year old, I suggest that yo download the latest CDT
package from the official website:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-cc-developers/junosr1

Thanks, I'll do so. Any idea why the 'platform' comes up when I open Eclipse?
