Hi all,
this is a quick alert of a p2 bug that may silently break installation of the OTDT:
During the discussion in https://bugs.eclipse.org/281510 I learned that it is not possible to
- install Eclipse as root/admin and
- add OTDT on top as a regular user.
This is because in this situtation, where several users may access a shared install, users can only add items, but not update/replace anything. Since OTDT brings its own version of org.eclipse.jdt.core, p2 will refuse to install it, if the installing process has no write permission to the eclipse install.
Previously, this limitation was signalled by a (cryptic) error message during the attempt to install OTDT. As of Juno this error message has gone, meaning you can proceed installing OTDT, but after install finishes you'll end up with an utterly broken Eclipse [1].
At the bottom line this means for Object Teams (and probably many more scenarios): don't use a shared install, make sure that the user installing new software into Eclipse has write permission to the install.
best,
Stephan
