What is this grey bar in the editor window? [message #898858]

To the right of an editor windows' vertical scroll bar I have a vertical grey bar which doesn't seem to have a purpose. What is it for, and can it be removed?

I'm using Eclipse Juno, build 20120614-1722 in OS X 10.7.4.

Hard to see with that small editor area. I guess it's the current line
marker.

It show line markers, like TODOs, Warnings, ...

Sorry, I was commenting on the horizontal grey bar. See Tom's answer.
