Hello everybody !

I meet some problems when I use TPTP 4.4.0.2 (with an external agent
Controller) with an VPN access and a proxy. I can surf but TPTP can't
record HTTP request !

Sometimes I meet the following error:
IWAT3040E unable to start recorder
Reason:
Your browser configuration setting for Automatic Configuration Script is
not supported
The Recorder only supports either no Proxy or both HTTP and Secure Proxy

But I think I use an unsecure proxy (no https)

Help me please !

Pierre

Hello Pierre,

I must first tell you that I have not attempted a HTTP recording through a
VPN, so I don't know for sure if it should work. If I get a chance
tonight, I will attempt a HTTP Recording from home though my company's
VPN. However, my manager told me that he has attempted a recording
through a VPN recently and that it does not work. We have not made any
official claim whether we do or do not support it to the best of my
knowledge.

The error message you are seeing is because the HTTP Recorder has detected
that you are using a Proxy Automatic Configuration script to connect to
the internet. Since the PAC script can tell Internet Explorer to NOT go
through a proxy to access many sites, we do not support that
configuration. That would lead to incomplete and inaccurate recordings.
The HTTP Recorder queries the registry for several IE settings that would
preclude the recording from being successful.

The TPTP HTTP Recorder acts as a proxy to IE (or Firefox). For IE, it
manipulates the registry and directs IE to send all its HTTP traffic to
where the recorder is 'listening' on the localhost machine and port 1080
(by default). It then pulls out the information it needs to write the
recording file, and sends the HTTP traffic where it supposed to go. A
Proxy Automatic Configuration script can tell IE to NOT send its HTTP
traffic to where the recorder is 'listening'. This leads to incomplete or
empty recordings. That is why we do not support that configuration.

Although I am uncertain at this moment if we support an HTTP recording
through a VPN, I know for sure you will get the error message you saw as
long as the box is checked for 'Use automation configuration script' box
from IE at Tools->Internet Settings->Connections->LAN Settings. If you
can uncheck that box, and still connect to the internet and browse
successfully, I suggest you could try a recording again. I would be
interested to hear if you could record successfully then.

Hello Mark,

First, I thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately, I tested by unchecking the box. But that still do not run.

Pierre,

This will be the third time I have attempted to respond to your latest
question. I hope it goes through this time.

What is the error message this time after unchecking the Proxy Auto Config
box? The error must be different than the last time.

I tested doing a recording through our company's VPN and had no problem at
all. I was recording with a direct connection to the Internet.

I suggest that you do the following:

1. Connect to the internet using your company's VPN
2. Look in IE at Tools->Internet Options->Connections -> LAN Settings and
make sure that nothing is checked. This will insure a direct connection
to the internet.
3. Browse to which ever websites you want to record. If you can't browse
there when you are not recording, you will not be able to record it.
4. Clear the IE temp files (Tools->Internet options->Delete Files) so you
will get a good recording.
5. Start TPTP and perform a recording.

These are the steps I followed and got a successful recording. If this
doesn't work, then the Internet Settings are not correct somehow, and I
will have you look at the registry settings before and during the
recording to find the problem.
