JVMTI (New Java Profiler) on Solaris? [message #86787] Thu, 09 November 2006 16:49 Go to next message

Hi,

I've tried a search but cannot find an answer.

Is there a version of the New Java Profiler (jvmti) for Solaris?

On the downloads page
( http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/downloads/downloads.php#jvm ti) there is
no link for Solaris, only Windows and Linux.

I want to be able to run the profiler on a Solaris Application Server, and
generate the trace log file. Is this possible?

On this page:
( http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/platform/documents/tutorials/jvm ti/Java_Application_Profiling_using_TPTP-v2.0.html#3.3)
it lists the instructions for Windows and Linux. But there is no
instructions for Solaris - is this because there is no version of the New
Java Profiler (jvmti)?

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

There is no JVMTI support on Solaris, but JVMPI is support on Solaris. You
can try using JVMPI instead.

Hi Navid,

Many thanks for your response.

Is there an implementation of JVMPI for Solaris* within the TPTP project?
I've looked back through the archive of downloads on the "Previous
Releases" page, and couldn't see any reference to JVMPI. Perhaps I'm
missing it if it the download doesn't use the name JVMPI.

* [which includes the features that I'm looking for:
o Offline logging capability, creating a logfile.
o Filtering capabilities to reduce the amount of data generated.
o Analysis of that logfile from within the TPTP plugin to Eclipse.]

Also, I'm just wondering do you know if there are any future plans for the
TPTP project to include a version of JVMTI for Solaris?

Thanks in advance,
Patrick Doyle

Hi Patrick,

The JVMPI agent is included as part of the Agent Controller. You'll need
to download the Solaris version of the Agent Controller listed on our
download page. Note that JVMPI is typically used for profiling
applications. It seems like you're interested in the log monitoring
aspect of TPTP. You can still use the Agent Controller to remotely import
a log file from your Solaris machine to your machine running the
workbench, but this doesn't make use of the JVMPI agent in any way.

Yes, JVMTI will most likely be supported on Solaris. It's hard to say
when though.

Navid Mehregani.

Hi Navid,

Thanks for the reply.

I think that your suggestion of just using the Agent Controller on Solaris
to create the trace logfile is exactly what I need.

Sorry for the confusion, I thought that I needed JVMTI to create the
logfile, I didn't realise that the Agent Controller can do it as well.

I think the Getting Started Guide at:
http://www.eclipse.org/tptp/home/downloads/installguide/agen tcontroller_42/solaris_sparc/getting_started.html
has all the instructions that I need to set up the Agent Controller on
Solaris.

Once I have the trace log file, I'll import that into Eclipse. That should
sort me out.

Thanks again,
Patrick
