I need to generate the report as a text file (txt).

Is this possible to do in BIRT ?

There is no text emitter in the default BIRT download but you can write
your own or use something like a CSV emitter that Iana Chatalbasheva
developed for the Integrating and Extending BIRT Book. You can download

BTW this link should be getting updated as the 3rd edition should be out
shortly.
