review.

This project will provide a comprehensive Business Process Management
Suite (BPMS) which covers all phases of the Business Process Lifecycle
including modeling, simulation, execution and monitoring.

Hi,

Sounds pretty interesting, however I have my doubts about this proposal.

That's the 10 years old code base. Coming from the acquired company. How can we make sure only essential 'framework' is extracted out of it? How Eclipse community will make sure someone else would be able to maintain and develop it further.
Standard support. What is execution language of the Runtime? BPMN 1.0 is not enough (BPMN 1.0 is not executable) must-have BPMN 2.0 support.
"End User Process Portal based on JSF" will it be also a part of the proposed project? If yes, what licensing issues will it have?

Renat, thank you for your feedback.

To your first point:

Age itself is not necessarily a criterion for quality, modularity and extensibility. Linux started 20 years ago and the Eclipse IDE shares the age with Stardust. Both have a vibrant community.

The Stardust codebase is developed by a team based in several locations around the world. This fact and the tools and communication used are the same as those used in open source projects. Stardust adheres to the Eclipse feature/plug-in standards and intensively interacts with components like the EMF and BIRT.

The code is modular, e.g. modeler and runtime environment are extensible via extension points. We are aiming at improving extensibility even more during incubation as we consider this to be key for adoption.

On your second issue:

BPMN 2.0 has formalized the semantics of the language elements, i.e. how they will behave in an execution context. That is no difference from what Stardust is already doing with BPMN 1.0 - the elements (activities, gateways etc.) behave as you would expect (and as BPMN 2.0 specifies it) and can be executed by the process engine. We intend to move towards BPMN 2.0 and are interested in the BPMN metamodel.

To your third point:

Yes, the portals are also part of the project. The product which is the source of the contribution currently uses ICEFaces (http://www.icefaces.org/) for the portals. It is licensed under the Mozilla Public License Version 1.1 (http://www.icefaces.org/main/ajax-java/license-faq.iface), which is compatible with the EPL.

Could you outline the relationships between your plans/ideas of supporting BPMN 2.0 to the existing BPMN2 component in the MDT project (http://www.eclipse.org/modeling/mdt , EMF implementation of BPMN 2.0 metamodel) and the recently proposed BPMN 2.0 Modeler project (http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/soa.bpmn2-modeler , graphical modeling tool for creation and editing of BPMN 2.0 diagrams)? IMO, it could also make sense to add corresponding notes to the "Relationship to other projects" section in the proposal.

thanks for your interest in our proposal!

We have recently met members of the BPMN 2.0 Modeler proposal at the EclipseCon 2011 and had a really good discussion.

The Stardust project has an interest in providing a BPMN 2.0 Modeler to the community and in order to achieve this, we're intending to collaborate with the BPMN 2.0 Modeler project to find a common ground.
Adoption and extension of the BPMN 2.0 Modeler would naturally entail leveraging the EMF BPMN 2.0 metamodel.

I hope I could answer your questions to your satisfaction! Please feel encouraged to keep asking if anything is unclear.
