.git Folder Visible in Navigator [message #653346]

I've been using SVN/Subversive for years and wanted to get into Git. I've decided to give EGit a try.

When I follow the tutorial on this page:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/EGit/User_Guide

...I end up with a project and a git repository and everything (including git-related stuff) seems to work fine. I can commit, view history, etc. However, when I view the project in a navigator view, the .git repository folder is visible and shows in the view as unversioned-files.

This doesn't seem right. None of the screenshots in the tutorials show a visible .git folder. Also, when I clone a remote git repository and create a new project from it, the .git folder is properly hidden from view.

Is there something simple I'm missing here? Is this a known bug?

I'm running Helios on Windows. I have the most recent EGit plugin as of the time of this writing.

I find if you Close the Project in Package Explorer and then Open it
again the .git folder remains permanently hidden.

Thank you for the suggestion, Phil. I gave it a shot but no luck. The folder still shows up in the Navigator view. I tried your suggestion on a brand new project just to be certain. I also tried it on my Mac and the issue happens there as well. For good measure I tried closing the project, exiting Eclipse and then going back in and opening it back up. The folder is still there.

By the way, the folder doesn't show at all and never has shown in the Package Explorer - only in the Navigator view. So, this isn't a huge deal when I'm doing Java projects. However, there are some web-based projects that I do where I and my team work in the Navigator view quite a bit. I just don't want someone accidentally messing up the .git folder because it's visible.

I'll look for another solution and see about submitting this as a bug. Thanks again for your help.

Mike it hides for me OK even in the Navigator View. I'm on Windows 7.
Eclipse 3.6.1 and EGit 0.11.0.201102081906.

Okay, I figured it out. I was running the 0.10.1 release. I installed to bleeding edge build and was eventually able to solve it.

Interestingly, even after upgrading the plug-in the .git folder still would not go away in my previously existing project. Opening and closing the preexisting project didn't get rid of the folder either.

I had to create a new project, close it, and reopen it, then the folder finally went away.

I hope this helps someone out there. Thanks for your help.

I discovered that if I share a project with the project tree nodes open
then I can see the .git folder in Package Explorer (assuming you haven't
filtered "*.resources"). But share the project with the project node
collapsed and you don't see it.
