Hi,
It looks like I never announced 0.8M4 in this forum, but at M5 I figure it's time
to give some updates on what's happening:
So, yes, the OTDT 0.8.0 M5 is released. Those who use the Eclipse SDK
(aka "classic" package) should have no trouble updating right away.
Users of other Eclipse packages might want to wait until all the M5 packages
are released (next Friday, supposedly). At that point the OTDT M5 will be available
in the central Indigo repository. Just this week I got approval from the Eclipse PMC
that we may indeed publish the JDT/Core patch under its original name
("org.eclispe.jdt.core"), which of course is essential for the OTDT to work.
So that approval is very good news indeed.
OTOH, the list of fixed bugs and the updates to the
new¬eworthy aren't much of a big deal this time.
However, behind the scenes I've made good progress on preparing another
component for release within the next few months: a fully dynamic runtime weaver
for OT/J. This was the result of Oliver Frank's student project ("Dimplomarbeit")
and will give us the following benefits:
- independence of load order, which means that the lazy loading of bundles / plug-ins
will work much better, resulting in improved start-up times
- full runtime weaving, which means that new OT/Equinox bundles can be deployed
and activated into a running application at any time.
I still have to work through the remaining 14% of test failures plus the IP process,
but the software is in good-enough shape to promise that this will be available
before too long.
Additionally, I got a bit more involved in JDT/Core work and I'm working hard to
make NullPointerExceptions a curiosity of the past, see bug 186342 et al.
The good news for Object Teams: while the JDT leads are reluctant to have
this released into the HEAD of JDT/Core I transformed my last patch into
an OT/Equinox plugin that is much easier to maintain and deploy than the patch
I see this as another success story of OT. I'll be blogging about that pretty soon.
Finally: if your favourite bug didn't make it into M5 don't feel shy to nag me
so I can prioritize bugs accordingly.
happy updating!
Stephan
