Is there a way to open the help in a view on the workbench (i.e not in a
seperate window).

At the moment I am calling
PlatformUI.getWorkbench().getHelpSystem().displayHelp() and this launches a
seperate window.

There is a help view that can open within the IDE, try Help -> Search. When the view comes up, select it and press Alt + Shift + F1 to see the details on the class being used.
