Eclipse not working anymore after JRE/JDK Reinstall [message #479917] Thu, 13 August 2009 02:44 Go to next message

Hi,

I've got the following problem, I hope someone can help:

I've been using Eclipse normally, without a problem, but I had to reinstall Java. I cleared all the Java Versions and Installations with all updates and installed the current JDK/JRE. Now, when I want to open Eclipse I get the following error:

Quote:
JVM terminated. Exit code=-1
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m
-Djava.class.path=D:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse-galileo\plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1 .0.200.v20090520.jar
-os win32
-ws win32
-arch x86
-showsplash D:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse-galileo\\plugins\org.eclipse.platform_3.3.200. v200906111540\splash.bmp
-launcher D:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse-galileo\eclipse.exe
-name Eclipse
--launcher.library D:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse-galileo\plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.w in32.win32.x86_1.0.200.v20090519\eclipse_1206.dll
-startup D:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse-galileo\plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1 .0.200.v20090520.jar
-product org.eclipse.epp.package.java.product
-vm D:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\server\jvm.dll
-vmargs
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5
-Xms40m
-Xmx256m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m
-Djava.class.path=D:\Program Files (x86)\eclipse-galileo\plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1 .0.200.v20090520.jar

I tried to look for the problem and found several people, but the solutions there didn't help. I tried to add the vm argument in the eclipse.ini file as well as command line and in the application shortcut, I also tried the $PATH Variable.
The two possible results I get when trying the different things are the error above or eclipse not reacting at all, No Splash Screen, no error, nothing, just some CPU usage and no eclipse process being spawned. The Windows Event Log doesn't have anything for me there.

Can anyone help me there?

Hello Andreas,

Try
Window -> Preferences -> Java -> Installed JRE's

Add your new JRE, and select ("check") it as the default JRE.

Hello Charlie,

I can't do that as Eclipse doesn't even think about starting up, I hardly
even get to the splash screen. There's no Eclipse preferences to set for
me.

Hello Andreas,

Are you using XP or Vista?

Have you set the JAVA_HOME environment variable so that it corresponds
to your new JRE?

Reboot your computer.

Create a new directory.
Unzip a new copy of Eclipse into that directory.
Create a "workspace" folder in the new directory
(at the same level as "Eclipse" after it is unzipped).

Execute the newly unzipped version of Eclipse.
When the splash screen prompts for a directory,
use the new "workspace" that you just created.

Copy projects from your old version of Eclipse into the new "workspace"
folder. The use File -> Import -> Import Existing projects,
to bring these into your new version of Eclipse.

Hello Charlie,

I am using Vista Business 64bit, SP2
Whether JAVA_HOME is set correctly or not doesn't seem to make much
difference. I tried setting it to the JDK-Included JRE as well as the
unique JRE installed by the JDK installer, both did not work.
I rebooted my computer a couple of times already, didn't really help
I tried this with an old eclipse version, with a new one, a freshly
downloaded and unzipped one, it didn't make any difference whatsoever. I
don't even need any workspace, it's not even trying to use one (or rather
can't).

cheers,
Andreas

Try to start using -vm and point to the directory where your JRE is
installed (e.g. D:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin).

If I use it as "D:\....\bin", it brings up the same message. If i point to
the exact java file, javaw.exe in the bin, it just spawns a small
eclipse.exe file and quits without message or error

Strange. Are you sure you have the right eclipse download and VM/JRE
that fit together. If in doubt I suggest to install fresh versions of
both. Also, you could try to launch eclipsec.exe instead of eclipse.exe
and use java.exe instead of javaw.exe. This might show you more detailed
errors.

It's a completely fresh installation of JDK and JRE 1.6, Update 16. It's
also a completely fresh version of Eclipse Galileo, IDE for Java
Developers, Windows Version.

When trying eclipsec.exe -vm ...javapath-to-java.exe... it doesn't show
any errors in the command line and doesn't start (same error as stated in
the first post) and kills the process again

cheers,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Please launch with "-consolelog -debug" as parameters in command line and report what it displays.

Thanks for the hint for this command. /? or -help didn't give me anything,
I didn't know the parameters.

I don't know why it worked before, but it seems this time around a 32bit
Eclipse didn't work. (I'm sure I only had Java32bit installed before, i
never installed java32 or eclipse64 on this system before)

Galileo 64 bit seems to work.

Eclipse and the JVM always have to agree in terms of 64-bit or 32-bit;
if you are using a 64-bit JVM then you must use the 64-bit build of
Eclipse, likewise with 32-bit.
Also, you should keep the -vm paramater in eclipse.ini and make sure it
follows the exact format (it is VERY picky) described here:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse.ini

Hope this helps,
Eric

Verify your PATH environment. If the java bin directory path is not exist then you have put it into PATH environment variable.

Before you execute your Eclipse IDE, you need to remove .metadata directory in workspace directory to clear predefined PATH var in Eclipse.

Try again.

Try changing the value in eclipse.ini
lowering the memory size might help you
-startup
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.201.R35x_v20090715. jar
--launcher.library
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.win32.win32.x86_1.0.200 .v20090519
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256m
-vmargs
-Xms256m
-Xmx512m

Change the bold underlined value.
