Digvijay,

This question is better asked on the UML2 newsgroup, so I've added that
the "to" list. My understanding is that profiles provide a "light
weight" extension mechanism for UML. I.e., you don't have to derived
new UML classes with additional property but rather apply a profile so
you can associate such properties directly with instances of the base
model so that your profile could be applied to any existing UML2 instance.

Your understanding is correct. Of course, more details on this and other
aspects of the UML specification can be found on the OMG's UML Resource page
at http://www.omg.org/uml. I will also be covering the subject of
customizing/extending UML at EclipseCon next week - see
http://www.eclipsecon.org/2007/index.php?page=sub/&id=37 03.
