I am definitely interested in what people think of this. IMHO, writing
articles is one very important part of building a community for a project.
However, we don't pay committers or contributors for writing code, reporting
bugs, writing documentation, answering newsgroup postings, etc, other very
important tasks for building a project community. Therefore, I am not sure
why writing articles is anything different.
Another way to look at it, is that it is goodness to have Eclipse articles
published on places like onjava, infoq, javalobby, sd times, eclipse
magazin, etc. etc. Provides more exposure for Eclipse.

I vote for paying for newsgroup postings. Ideally, I'd like a per-word
rate since I can be quite verbose when I so desire. But I'd settle for
per-post. I volunteer to be the beta tester for this new policy - I'll
send you my direct-deposit information offline so we can start testing it.

Ian,
I agree with how you characterize the situation. Many of us work very
hard, even using our own person time, to provide everything from code to
documentation, so to single out one particular aspect as something that
the foundation should pay for would seem not to be in keeping with the
spirit of open source. Probably many of the organizations that pay for
articles also benefit from the advertising that shows up when people
read those articles, and certainly this helps offset the payments.
Goodness forbid that Eclipse should decide to host advertisement! I can
see the NetBeans adds now!! :-)

Clearly great minds think alike, because I had the same thought! Or is
that small minds seldom differ?! :-) In any case, if I had a penny
per download and a dollar per posted answer, I'd be in business! I
think longer answers should be worth more, so prorating is definitely a
plus! If the foundation doesn't support this excellent plan, donations
will be most welcome, preferably in the form of small unmarked
non-sequential bills...

Just kidding. It's a very good point. Indeed I'm very fond of my
Eclipse-logo sweat shirt and I know that other covet it so that makes it
even better. :-)

I agree with Ed. Lots of people get Swag for doing cool stuff, like
articles. Sure if is some form of 'payment' but from a pure monetary
perspective it is pretty insignificant.
