Paul,
Haven't heard of such slow performance, and given your observation
comparing the Java JDBC call, something must be wrong in your
environment/configuration.
A couple of things to check -- look in your eclipse/features directory and
let us know the version number appended on the end of the
org.eclipse.datatools.enablement.oracle.feature directory (Something like
"1.6.0.200801211"). Also, check in your /workspace/.metadata directory for
a .log file and see if there is anything to note in it, especially
starting with a "org.eclipse.datatools." prefix.
