Steve,

EMF questions are best asked on the EMF newsgroup (which I've added to
the send list). I don't know what pure XMI means any better than I
would understand what pure XML means. A pure XML file could contain
anything, i.e., it could be XMI, it could be an XML Schema , XHMTL,
Ecore, a serialized Library model, WSDL, and so on. So saying a file is
XML says almost nothing and similarly saying a file is pure XMI too is
telling me effectively nothing about it what I should expect to see
except that I can expect to see an XMI namespace and a certain style of
serialization. The real question is, what does the XMI represent and
more importantly is there a UML or EMOF metamodel that describes what it
represents? If your XMI a conforming serialization of a UML2 instance,
you should be able to import it using the UML2 project's EMF importer
