Eclipse updater deletes eclipse.exe? [message #1804596] Fri, 29 March 2019 07:58 Go to next message

Updating from the previous version of Eclipse to the latest one, using Eclipse itself.

_Seemed_ to download and install fine.

Asked me if I wanted to restart Eclipse to finish the update. I click yes, restart.

Eclipse exits. It doesn't restart.

The Eclipse shortcut pinned to the taskbar loses its icon.

Clicking it now says "The item 'eclipse.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly."

Do a search for the new eclipse.exe location...

There is no file named eclipse.exe on my computer (other than an old copy in a temp folder dated last year).

There's still an eclipse FOLDER where it should be, eclipse.ini, eclipsec.exe etc. So I can still launch eclipse with eclipsec, and my existing projects are still around, though of course eclipsec doesn't have the icon.

So what happened to eclipse.exe?

From which version of Eclipse did you start the update? To which version did you try to update?

If you have been running 32 bit Photon or earlier, and attempt to update it, the installer removes the run file. It also commits suicide, removing the installer executable if you attempt to update it.

This is because the 32 bit support has been removed from Eclipse platform.

From: [According to the zip still in my downloads folder] 2018-09 64 bit from the 'Eclipse IDE for Java Developers' eclipse-java-2018-09-win32-x86_64.zip (the 32-bit link goes to eclipse-java-2018-09-win32.zip instead)
