Is it possible to use the SpanningDataLayer and an ISpanningDataProvider with a GridLayer? [message #1774139]

When messing around with a GridLayer and a SpanningDataLayer with a custom ISpanningDataProvider the spanning just doesn't happen. Must I have done something wrong along the way or are they just incompatible?
